The history of the idea of ether goes back to antiquity, where it appeared and took shape in the doctrine of the elements, among other things. Its various forms, sometimes more materially, sometimes more spiritually, have apparently disappeared from the radar only in the 'modern' natural sciences, especially with Einstein's theories of relativity. –
